Battle of Hohenlinden, Following Xaver Terofal in Dorfen,
Hogs, Snake, Blackforest Cake
Thomas Campbell wrote a great poem about the Battle.
Maybe he confused the geography. […Of Iser, rolling rapidly…] What is „Iser“? Does that refer to the known to be wild „Isar“ river? Which is not visible at Hohenlinden. The Isar river is maybe 10 km to the west. Or does it refer to river „Isen“ which is smaller and caused a 30 years lasting battle? And not as wild. Did the author confuse the names?
The Iser was rolling not too rapidly during our visit, the sun on yon level was redder and yellower than any artillery centuries ago on the flats. (11.05.2024) No war was piercing the snowy clouds on that cloudless, sunny day, only some bees might use their stings if the heroes would sit down inattentive. No waving banners in Munich in the distance recognizable (the European Soccer Championship had not yet started). Neither furious Frank nor Scotsmen and fiery Hun (14.06.2024 1-5) smacking each other’s kissers. Nobody bravely rushing to glory or the graves. No white snow needed to soke up the blood which long vanished in the sepulchers. But some bones are still there.
Enough of that Scottish nonsense. We started the bicycle trip in Dorfen with more important stuff. A healthy breakfast. A Blackforest cake and some coffee in Dorfen. Where Actor, Schuplatter, Zitter-Player, traveller and theatre founder- and operator Xaver Terofal was born and learned the professions of Butchery and Beer Brewing. Before he indulged in the art of acting.
Where 1962 a memorial plaque was unveiled.
We continued to the famous Battlefield Hohenlinden where the Bavarians under (still only Duke and Elector) Maximilian IV, (Wittelsbacher) later king Max I., lost another battle. This time on the side of the Habsburger (under unexperienced Erzherzog Johann) against Napoleon. Later Max sold his soul and sent many Bavarian men on the Battlefield in Russia to get the title King and lost again.
This time we were also joined by another member of the royal class.
Church St. Joseph in Hohenlinden.
We continued to the communal parc Sauschütt, saw some Deer, Hogs and a snake and had a tasty meal amid the beautiful forest. (Currywurst sausage with fries, from pig),
Butch at the end of the tunnel. Blocking the view into the woodpeckers nest.
