We suggest to play that music to ad more atmosphere.

As the event started before 1549 when it was documented that the local people asked for the permit to stage is again, it is probably 500 years old.

Which makes me jealous. It of course is no mediaeval event (as some chester on the marcet place having picnic persumed) but a Renaissance Festival. They were poorer fisherfolks people who before saw knights jousting and they wanted to do something similar. But only had the Zillen (flat boats on the river).

As the events in Ulm are still going on today on Schwörenmontag and since the story was even mentioned in the National Geographic Magazine Traveller in July I already put a makeshift story on my Duck Site.

Most important part of the Events focuses on the annual “Schwörermontag” (Monday).

That is renewing swearing the oaths on the city’s constitution from 1397. (schwören, swear)

And the officials are giving account about their actions during the past year.

As the event of the “Fischerstechen” (Fisherfolk Jousting) started before 1549 when it was documented that the local people asked for the permit to stage is again, it is probably 500 years old.

Which makes me jealous. It of course is no mediaeval event but a Renaissance Festival.

It started as an event during the carnival season. But the good people of the Free Imperial City figured out during the long history that the river (Danube) is very cold in winter. Therefor it was moved into the summer season. Throwing candy during the carnival parades is a custom during carnival and this is why they throw something too during the Fischerstechen Parade. But they throw vegetables. Of course I had to get us a sustainable souvenir, a radish.

The week is full of parties now, concerts and booze. And even the famous church tower is closed partly during that time.

To make sure, we duckument it for the first time together with the Rubber Ducks. So here are some pictures.

During the Fischerstechen and the parade many historic figures appear, like the Spatz von Ulm, here together with horses, a fish and a Duck. Ligning up ahead of the event.

Duck, Sparrow (refering to the Famous Ulmer Spatz), Horses and Fish

I

Important historic figure is the „Schneider von Ulm“ (Name: Berblinger, tailor) who constructed a hanglider long before Gustav Weißkopf or later the Wright Brothers started to work on their planes. The tailor found a prominent sponsor, „Friedrich I. , king of Bathe. The Bavarian Crown Prinz Ludwig (son of King Maximilian, later King Ludwig I. of Bavaria also watched the event. Unfortunately the wind was bad that day, the taylor was not allowed to use the church tower and the cold water at the replacement starting ramp caused downdraft. Therefore the unfortunate tailor ended in the Danube. He was called a liar, lost his job and later starved to death.

Our reward for getting up so early

The historic dance in front of the Ulmer Münster (cathedral).

A passing Duck, a true hero; passing the boat on the river

Fortunatly none bumped into the boats.

The Ducks had to share the river that day with the humans during the Fischerstechen.

And the Nabada where thousands of people drift down the Danube river on makeshift boats and whatever floats.

The winner Good King Max I., Bavaria. (Wittelsbacher)

Rescue teams were present too. Here the „DLRG“ boat „Waller“ (wels catfish) together with David, our rescue swimmer who works for the DLRG.

One of several water mills along the short but powerful Blau River which moths into the Danube in Ulm.

Amazing, how much entergy males put in such events.

The important part is that King Maximilian I. of Bavaria won the Swabian event. Both sessions on Friday and Sunday. We were cheering through Emperor Karl V and King Max shouting loudly the names of our favorites. The Swabians next to us were looking a bit indignantly.

-Karl did not make it into the final,

-but good King Max won the tournament.

Max defeated the Swabian Cowbow

I stayed in the same hotel where both Max and Karl stayed too: the Hotel Goldenes Kreuz in Ratisbon.
