The monastery „Kloster Weltenburg“ at the famous “Donaudurchbruch” (Danube breakthrough) was often subject of severe flooding. We came here some years ago on a nice, normal day and could enjoy the site and the beer. Roman Settlements of 45 a.C. have been found here, and an important Romand road ran near by.
And there always was a lot of concern about the excellent beer of the „Weltenburger Klosterbrauerei“ (they say beer here is brewed since 1050 which makes it the oldes Monastery Brewery) in the basement which might suffer from the flood but it was saved. But as beer is important in catholic diet the Saints and prayers helped.
A small ferry at this place takes pedestrians or cyclers across the Danube River.
