The swarm had been planning a trip to the Königssee for many years. The Lake is the cleanest in Bavaria, has a rock wall which provides for a famous echo. And there is a very old church 12’th Century St. Bartholomäs on the castaway back side of the lake which is barely reachable even on foot. An “Einöde”. Mostly only electric propelled boats are allowed on the lake amid another hunting ground of the Wittelsbacher. Wittelsbacher King Ludwig I. was not only Hunting Girls but also deer and here they show one of his trophys. (not a good one)

Only the fishermen who have the exclusive fishing rights may use a fuel driven boat. This is due to an old regulation of Prinzregent Luitpold. A very early regulation of sustainability and nature conservation. And of course game doesnt like noise.

We came on the first boat in the morning which can’t be reserved by internet.

We came in on a wet morning with black ice after cold nights and it was dangerously slippery in the harbor. The boats normally run all year long as the lake hardly ever freezes. But nee reservation now via internet.

The lake is on the list of tours “Europe in 5 days” and gets a lot of visitors from Asia.

It was a delight to sail across the lake in the still lazy morning and to listen to the famous echo at the echo rock. Normally on of the crew members is able to play trumpet and we had one too on the boat who did a great job. Actually it is not included in the fare but tips are welcome.

We visited the little unusually designed church

and were the first visitors in the cozy inn next to the church. We had to wait a little for the kitchen to be opened and drank some tee.

And then ordered a Char which was done perfectly. Char is the main kind of fish in the lake.

But there is also some rare trout in the lake.

Actually the biggest lake trout in Bavaria was fished in the lake. It is easy to show its gigantic size by comparing it to that of a Duck. Which is also posted on the internet on the tourist sites.

While we were eating after taking a picture of our Char a young couple from Asia came in in a hurry and immediately ordered without reading the menu before sitting down:

-Famous Fish

-Sausage White

The waiter seemed to know the procedure. The food came fast, pictures were taken and I had to prevent a Weißwurst massacre and told the couple the basics. The pair of sausages comes in a bowl with hot water. It comes with a Brezel, sweet mustard and you should normally have a Weißbier (beer) with it. You neither eat the sausages out of the bowl nor eat the sausage water. The 2 sausages are connected still with the sausage skin. That way the aroma is better kept. The water in the bowl is to keep it warm. First thing is, you take the two sausages out of the water, put it on a plate and separate them. It can be done by hand too if no silverware is available. Start with one sausage and put the other one back in the bowl to keep it warm. It’s finger food. There are many operational manuals on the internet on how to skin, suck or cut the sausages and scrap out the meat. For those who are in a hurry.

My personal tip for sophisticated people: in the old days without refrigerators, you would smell and taste the first bite without dunking it into the mustard. To be sure they are still fresh and OK. This is why they served it in the old days only till 12 am.  For tradition we stll smell aind eat the first bite without mustard.

Next to the church there are only a few farm buildings for the farmers and Sennerinnen.

On the other side of the lake at the start you can see the “Schlafende Hex” (Sleeping Witch is a nickname, correct is Rotofentürme, a legendary mythical mountain in the Lattengebirge Mountain Range).  The legend has it, that the witch killed many Cristian pilgrims with poison or thrown rocks. But St. Martinus braved her with a golden cross and brought her down
