Altötting is a famous Catholic pilgrimages site in Bavaria. The compound also puts up a museum about the procedure of pilgrimages which also honestly tells about the commercial interest involved. It was visited by Pope John Paul II 1980 and Benedict XVI in 2006 who was here frequently as he was born in the area. Most important part is the Grace Chapel with a statue of holy Mary who is said to have conducted several wonders.

Wonders and blessings are what pious folks who come here are paying for here, ovten after donating big candles. Like documented in this song.

It was a tradition of the Wittelsbacher family to burry parts of their dead bodies in an urn in the chapel. Not today of course, today the family cemetery is in monastery Andechs. The tradition in Altötting started with Kurfürst (elector) Maximilian I of Bavaria

Altötting is part of the association of the most important Holy Mary pilgrimages sites “Shrines of Europe”, another example is Fátima in Portugal.
