Ratisbon, another Royal Residence Goldenes Kreuz

Ramsau Malerwinkel St. Sebastian Ike

Wittelsbacher, Windbüchse,  Wallhalla,

We again went back to Ratisbon. This time to stay in another royal residence. Which put up many royal guests in its history. Emperors too.

We stayed in the room of Prince Metternich above the house chapel. In the hotel “Goldenes Kreuz) where Emperor Karl V. 1546 had a love affair with famous “Die Schöne Barbara” (Barbara Blomberg).

Becoming parents of Don Juan de Austria

Habsburger Karl V. was King in Spain and emperor of the Holy Roman Empire from 1520 to 1556. Barbara later received a pension, married, moved to Luxembourg, the Netherlands and at the end to Spain. She sailed to Laredo in Spain, where she stayed in a monastery for a while but later moved with her family to a farm also still living from a pension she received from the Habsburger. Her son Don Juan de Austria grew up in Spain under the name Geronimo and became an important soldier in the Habsburger army/navy. The fleet, together with famous Admiral Andrea Doria defeated the Osmania fleet and killed Osmania Admiral Ali Pascha in the Battle of Lepanto(ain’t it lovely if your decapitation is used in music).

Juan was engaged in North Africa and became a candidate to marry Maria Stuart who was in prison at that time. His death at an age of 31 is unclear and might have resulted from longtime poisoning. He is buried in the Escorial in Spain.

We also saw the place where Keppler worked.

and walked over the nice old Stony Bridge.

Here is a list of some of the famous people who later stayed in the hotel which dates to 1250

Ferdinand I, Emperor

Karl V. Emperor; was here several times; an allied of the King of Tunis Mulay Hasan

Maximilian I., King of Bavaria

Ludwig I., King of Bavaria

Maximilian II, King of Bavaria

King Wilhelm I. of Prussia,

King Johann of Saxony since 1854 (Wettiner), Queen Amalie Auguste of Bavaria

Ludwig II. only stayed in the house for some hours to visit

Emperor Wilhelm I.

We enjoyed the lovely royal room and atmosphere in the hotel with a gorgeous view in the center of town.

And the nice neighbor also very old Hotel Arch where we stayed before.

and learned, that Emperor Karl V.performed the Christian custom “Fußwaschung” (he washed the feat of 12 old men in the house chapel) Easter 1541. He was too busy to leave the house for the cathedral to join mass during another stay at the Perpetual Diet in Ratisbon.

We again visited the “Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte” (museum about Bavarian history in Regensburg; Ratisbon).

Hitler in fact had a giant globe which is also visible in the museum. !!!! We are still preparing our Lohengrin coverage !!!!

We accomplished the collection of Souvenirs shown in the Museum connected with the Wittelsbacher

Sheila enjoyed a “trip” to Italy in the south in the nice Gogomobil car (BMW)

and watched the video of the arrival of late Franz Joseph Strauß (who did not make it further than to Stalingrad before in Russia) in Moskau. After his spectacular landing as pilot in a snowstorm.

We also again sailed on the “Danube River” to Donaustauf. To the Walhalla, which we had visited before and enjoyed a lovely sunset.

We bought more candy in Coffee “Prinzess” like Rottacher Mädel, Fesche Münchnerinnen, Alpspitz – Traum or Don Juan Cannon Balls.
